Creating Community Destinations to Bring People Back to the Urban Center

As many of our urban centers continue to lose population, the challenges of vacant properties and vacant land create immense burdens for local residents, communities, and local governments. This track will highlight artistic, design, green space development, and planning initiatives that have been successful in enhancing the quality of life in urban neighborhoods. The dialogue will bring best practices to light while problem-solving solutions to planning, policy, and institutional challenges.

  • Land banking and mothballing strategies to focus planning efforts and encourage preservation
  • Arts and community projects to engage local youth and community members
  • Green space projects, community gardens, and pocket parks as strategies to enhance neighborhoods
  • Common obstacles, political challenges, and opportunities
