Deconstruction Training

Designing a Project for Deconstruction
Following the Great Lakes ReUse Conference
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
9:00 am to 4:00 pm
$125 includes a full-day training and catered lunch
Deconstructing a building can be a challenging task. For fifteen years, RE-USE Consulting has been ‘engineering’ projects to help make deconstruction work. Building owners, architects, government officials, and other groups should consider attending our one-day training called Designing a Project for Deconstruction.
We will not focus on how to physically deconstruct a building, but we will focus on the who, what, why, where, and when of this process. Our goal is to help prepare you to deal with abandoned and vacant housing stocks, teach you what to look for in a building and how to plan and complete a deconstruction project. The day will include a seminar in a classroom setting, catered lunch, a deconstruction site visit and field work, group exchange, and an open forum.
The day will start in the classroom, where discussion topics will be tailored to meet the interests of participants. Topics may include:
- Decon 101: Basic Information
- Site Access
- Grant funded Deconstruction
- Material Sales
- Strategies for Reducing Deconstruction bids
- Reuse by owner
- Mandatory Diversion Requirements
- Assessing Buildings for Deconstructability
- Partnering and Owner Involvement
- Scheduling in Deconstruction
- Haz Mat and Deconstruction
- Safe Deconstruction and Salvage Work
- Case Studies
- Training or Retraining Local Contractors
- Scope of a Deconstruction Project
- Public Opinion, Public Relations
- Auctioning and sales by Owner/General Contractor
After lunch, the group will travel to a nearby building and tour an actual deconstruction job site. The larger group will break into smaller groups and lessons learned in the classroom will be put to use on an actual structure. After visiting the site, the group will return to the classroom to share findings and RE-USE Consulting’s Dave Bennink will field questions. Those who would like to stay will then participate in an open forum to share experiences and ask questions.
